Maryland Wineries, Merchants Seek Direct Shipping
March 05, 2011
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP)- Maryland wineries and retailers are seeking approval to ship their vintages directly to consumers.
The heads of local wineries and wine merchants made their pitch Friday before a pair of General Assembly committees, saying it would help expand their business.
But other wine and alcohol vendors, who operate under strict liquor laws, said Friday that a flood of out-of-state competition would cut into their bottom line.
Senate Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee Chairwoman Joan Carter Conway told lobbyists in February that a modified version of the bill would be approved this year.
